A pumpkin engraved in pen and ink, its ribs built from hatching alone with no flat gray anywhere, is the single best object on any of these pages. Nine oval cartouches held in axial symmetry, the three spices among them at the same scale, and the title in spaced bodoni capitals.

What this style does
Pen and black ink engravings, with no flat gray at all: every halftone comes from the density of the hatching. Each ingredient sits in an oval cartouche with a double rule, and the page is symmetrical inside a double-ruled frame.
Very slightly broken paper, black alone, gray kept for secondary type. A bodoni in spaced capitals, roman numerals for the steps. The object it imitates is a perfumer's label.
Who it is for
Quiet kitchens, old apartments, the gift that should look expensive without raising its voice.
What is in it
1 pie crust, 15 oz pumpkin puree, 12 oz evaporated milk, 3 egg, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, salt and pepper.
