Ten ingredients engraved at the line, each in its oval cartouche, and not one color to tell them apart: the onions, the carrots and the potatoes are separated by hatching alone. It is the heaviest page of the collection, and the one where the double-ruled frame does the most work.

What this style does
Pen and black ink engravings, with no flat gray at all: every halftone comes from the density of the hatching. Each ingredient sits in an oval cartouche with a double rule, and the page is symmetrical inside a double-ruled frame.
Very slightly broken paper, black alone, gray kept for secondary type. A bodoni in spaced capitals, roman numerals for the steps. The object it imitates is a perfumer's label.
Who it is for
Quiet kitchens, old apartments, the gift that should look expensive without raising its voice.
What is in it
4 lb chuck roast, 2 onion, 6 carrots, 6 potatoes, 4 garlic cloves, 2 tbsp tomato paste, 1 cup red wine, 2 cups beef broth, 2 bay leaves, salt and pepper.
