Poultry engraved at the line, each piece in its own oval cartouche, is the oldest use of this style and still the best one. Nine cartouches inside the double-ruled frame, the paprika and the cayenne told apart by hatching alone, and 325 set in small capitals under the axial line.

What this style does
Pen and black ink engravings, with no flat gray at all: every halftone comes from the density of the hatching. Each ingredient sits in an oval cartouche with a double rule, and the page is symmetrical inside a double-ruled frame.
Very slightly broken paper, black alone, gray kept for secondary type. A bodoni in spaced capitals, roman numerals for the steps. The object it imitates is a perfumer's label.
