Eight cartouches inside the double-ruled frame leave more air than any other page of this collection, and the engraving is the style that uses air best. The butter and the eggs are rendered entirely in hatching, the maple syrup jug among them like a raw material on a label, and the title in spaced capitals.

What this style does
Pen and black ink engravings, with no flat gray at all: every halftone comes from the density of the hatching. Each ingredient sits in an oval cartouche with a double rule, and the page is symmetrical inside a double-ruled frame.
Very slightly broken paper, black alone, gray kept for secondary type. A bodoni in spaced capitals, roman numerals for the steps. The object it imitates is a perfumer's label.
Who it is for
Quiet kitchens, old apartments, the gift that should look expensive without raising its voice.
What is in it
2 cups all-purpose flour, 2 cups buttermilk, 2 egg, 4 tbsp butter, 2 tbsp granulated sugar, 1 tbsp baking powder, maple syrup, salt and pepper.
