Poultry, root vegetables and herbs engraved at the line is the oldest subject this style has, and ten cartouches fill the frame without crowding it. The carrots and the celery are separated by hatching alone, the thyme sprigs are drawn at the same scale, and the hour sits in small capitals under the axial line.

What this style does
Pen and black ink engravings, with no flat gray at all: every halftone comes from the density of the hatching. Each ingredient sits in an oval cartouche with a double rule, and the page is symmetrical inside a double-ruled frame.
Very slightly broken paper, black alone, gray kept for secondary type. A bodoni in spaced capitals, roman numerals for the steps. The object it imitates is a perfumer's label.
Who it is for
Quiet kitchens, old apartments, the gift that should look expensive without raising its voice.
What is in it
2 lb chicken thighs, 4 carrots, 3 celery, 1 yellow onion, 3 garlic cloves, 8 oz egg noodles, 4 sprigs thyme, 2 bay leaves, 1 bunch parsley, salt and pepper.
